Jeff, Who Lives At Home (Dir. Jay & Mark Duplass)
“It’s weird, we don’t start conceptually with that like, “Let’s make a man-child movie.” We just get interested in these people and it’s much more of a visceral “I love this guy” you know? I mean, Jeff in particular was honestly almost born out of the neo-philosopher guys who we knew who were living in south Austin at the time. It’s like, ‘cargo shorts and thinking about stuff and walking around town’. That is hilarious and kind of tragic and really beautiful to us. So I guess on some level, you could look at it as a delayed adulthood or prolonged adolescence. For us, it’s really about the nature of a person who believes so strongly that the universe has something special in store for him that he’s willing to wait. He won’t get a job and really won’t get a girlfriend. He’s holding out for greatness. That’s fascinating to us, that one person could look at him and be like “oh, he’s a stoner” and blow him off. But if you look a little closer, he kind of has a lot of integrity too on some level. That’s the funny and sweet thing about that guy.”
